GB & Ireland fall short in Curtis Cup quest

The visiting team needed a final day escape to match Europe’s 2012 Ryder Cup “Miracle at Medinah”, but there were to be no late heroics as the US converted a 9½-2½ lead heading into the singles to a 13-7 victory.

Georgia Hall, Gemma Dryburgh, Charlotte Thomas and Stephanie Meadow all earned singles wins for GB&I in the biennial battle between the leading amateur players.

But US Amateur champion Emma Talley, Ally McDonald and Annie Park posted resounding successes in their matches against Bronte Law, Annabel Dimmock and Gabriella Cowley, respectively, and the overall outcome was never in doubt.

Talley, who scored the trophy-clinching point with her 4&3 win over Law, said: “Dreams do come true, that’s for sure.

“This was the best week ever. I’m just happy to play with my friends and to win for my country is even better.”

She added: “I wanted to get it done for my team so they could play their hearts out.

“We all wanted to play for each other this week and we all did this.

“It was a privilege that I got to go out first and I was very happy that I got that opportunity and glad I got to secure the point.”

The US team relinquished the cup two years ago in Nairn, Scotland, after seven successive victories, but now have it back.
