David Law leads in France

David Law leads the Cordon Golf Open by two shots at the Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val André after a late start to round one meant he closed with one hole still to play.

Play was delayed for three hours after six greens were vandalised overnight, a knock-on effect being that the afternoon starters were unable to complete their first rounds.

Law managed 17 holes before darkness fell, making six birdies to top the leaderboard on six under par.

“I’ve been playing well for the last few weeks and this course is a great place to play,” said the 24 year old. “Today my long game was excellent and my putting was also great.

“I made my first birdie on the third hole thanks to a nice putt. On the 17th I sank a 20 foot putt for birdie and it was great to end my day on that positive point.

“Tomorrow it will be the same as today, I have one hole to finish my round and another 18 holes to go through.”

Of those in the clubhouse it was Law’s compatriot Jack Doherty who led the way, his four under par round of 66 featuring five birdies and an eagle.

“I woke up at 6.30 this morning and the text just came through, which was a surprise,” said the 33 year old. “I’ve never had that before but that was fine – I had breakfast and went back to bed for a couple extra hours.

“I played well, was five under par on the front nine, a lot of birdies and anytime you do that you’re happy. I putted well and keeping it playing is kind of crucial around this golf course.

“The course is in the best condition, the greens, fairways and everything. I’ve played here a few times, last year I think I made a first round 64, so I’m quite comfortable around here, it suits my game.

“I think you have to play on it a few times to get the feel of it and the placement of the tees and know where to go and where to go, but I’ve put myself in a good position already.”
