CRAIG LEE got off to a flying start in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth today - by recording his first hole-in-one on the European Tour.

The ace came at the 154-yard second and was the 27th hole-in-one in the history of the European Tour’s flagship event.

Unfortunately for Lee, it didn’t earn him a new car from the sponsors as the 14th hole on the West Course is where that’s on offer for such a feat this week.

One player already out of the reckoning in Surrey is Stephen Gallacher after a wrist injury forced the Scottish No 1 to withdraw before teeing off in the opening round.

Tendonitis flared up on Wednesday morning, meaning the Lothians star missed out on partnering Gordon Strachan, Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness in the Pro-Am.

He had a cortisone injection in the hope it could ease the pain sufficiently overnight but Gallacher withdrew before his scheduled 8.25am tee time.

Fifth behind Rory McIlroy 12 months ago, the 40-year-old said he was “disappointed” to miss out on the European Tour’s flagship event.

“The wrist is better but not quite there,” he added, before heading home to rest in the hope the injury will have cleared fully in time for next week’s Irish Open at Royal County Down.
