Clive Edginton set for second stint as R&A captain

Englishman only the second to serve consecutive terms

Clive Edginton is set to become just the second captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews to serve in the post for two successive terms.

The 68-year-old Englishman, who took office last September, has been nominated for the 2020/21 term as well due to the disruption caused by Covid-19.

It is only the second occasion since the club was founded in 1754 that a captain has served two successive terms, the first being Major John Murray Belshes in 1835 and 1836.

“This is a difficult time for all of us in the midst of this pandemic, but I am happy that I can continue to serve the club as we look positively to the future,” said Edginton.

Meanwhile, the International Golf Federation has cancelled the 2020 World Amateur Team Championships. It is hoped both events can be held in Singapore on the same dates in 2021, with the Espirito Santo Trophy for women scheduled from 14-17 October and the Eisenhower Trophy for men from 21-24 October.

The R&A has also cancelled the 2020 Women’s Amateur Latin America Championship in Argentina.

The inaugural event was due to take place in in September at Pilar Golf in Buenos Aires but will now be played next September at the same venue.
