Golf: Watton in top form for Midlothian

MIDLOTHIAN headed into today's final matches in the East Women's Inter-County event at Royal Musselburgh in a strong position to retain the title.

They followed up a win over Fife on the first day by also beating Stirling & Clackmannan, 6-2 to be left as the only team with a 100 per cent record.

For the second day running, Mortonhall's Rachael Watton played her part in Midlothian's success. First, she joined forces with Louise Fraser to win the top foursomes encounter and then the young gun went out in the afternoon and won the top singles against Alison Goodwin.

Karen Marshall and Wendy Nicholson combined well again to give Midlothian their second foursomes point, while Fraser, Marshall and Gabrielle MacDonald added to Watton's success in the singles, which also saw Nicholson deliver a half point.

In yesterday's other match, East Lothian suffered a second defeat of the week as they went down 6-3 to Fife.

Clara Young and Keren Ward won their foursomes for East Lothian, while Young again and Emma Fairnie were victors in the afternoon.

On paper, Midlothian looked strong favourites to make it three wins in a row and retain the title but East Lothian would be out to salvage some pride and that would make them dangerous opponents on the closing day.
