Golf: Steady show secures top ten for Greg Nicolson

MORTONHALL'S Greg Nicolson produced a consistent display to secure a top-ten finish behind winner Ross Kellett in the Tennant Cup.

The former US college kid, who was disqualified in the Scottish Stroke-Play Championship when he got stuck in traffic and missed his second-round tee time at Glasgow Gailes, made a happier return to the Ayrshire venue on Saturday as he opened with rounds of 71 and 73.

He kept up the good work as the action moved to Killermont yesterday, adding rounds of 72 and 73 for a total of 289 and a share of ninth spot.

Kellett of Colville Park bounced back from the disappointment of failing to qualify for the knock-out phase of the Amateur Championship with a polished performance.

The GB&I squad member shot rounds of 71 and 68 at Gailes before adding a 68 and 73 at Killermont to win the Scottish Order of Merit event by four shots.

Ranfurly Castle's Sam Binning produced a storming closing round of 65 to finish alongside Michael Stewart of Troon Welbeck on 284.

In addition to Nicolson, three other Lothians players made the cut. James Ross (Royal Burgess) and Baberton's Paul Ferrier finished on 299, six ahead of Craigmillar Park's Richard Gill.
