Golf: Saltmans in line for crack at Tour card

THE Saltman brothers will both have the chance to earn return tickets to the European Golf Tour in Spain this weekend.

It follows Elliot joining his younger sibling, Lloyd, in the field for the final stage of the Qualifying School.

Elliot found himself back at the second stage after finishing outside the top 200 in his rookie year on the top circuit.

But he passed the test in southern Spain yesterday, joining Callum Macaulay and Alan McLean as the only Scots amongst 81 qualifiers.

The 29-year-old Archerfield ace shot rounds of 67, 72, 67 and 69 for a nine-under-par total of 275, securing seventh spot.

In the last round, Saltman was out in 34 before mixing three birdies with two bogeys in his final seven holes.

He is now heading to Girona to join up with Lloyd, who was exempt from the second stage.

The return to PGA Catalunya will bring back happy memories for the two brothers as it’s where they both secured Tour cards for the first time 12 months ago.

For the rest of the Lothians players who entered this year’s Qualifying School, their race has been run.

Also at Las Colinas, Craigielaw’s Shaun McAllister finished in a tie for 44th after signing off with two 74s.

But, with another year’s experience under his belt, he might go close to making the final stage in a year’s time.

Mark Kerr was lying in tie for 60th at the same venue heading into the final round, but his last-day score has not been listed.

Elsewhere, Lothians-based Jamie McLeary closed with a 69 but was only able to secure 38th spot at Costa Ballena, where Braid Hills’ professional Paul McKechnie and Raymond Russell were 59th and 61st respectively.

Dunbar’s Neil Fenwick also missed out at La Manga, where he also finished in a tie for 61st on a tough par-73 course.
