Golf: Royal Burgess set to go out ‘guns blazing’ against Sandyhills

ROYAL BURGESS will be going out with “all guns blazing” in tomorrow’s first leg of the Inter-Cities Cup.

The Barnton club’s fifth successive appearance in the Edinburgh versus Glasgow clash sees them at home for the first time in the opening leg. Sandyhills are the visitors and Burgess team manager Richard Hughes is looking for his side to build a healthy advantage for the return tie.

“I don’t know much about the opposition, but I noted that they only lost one match during this season’s campaign,” he said. “That was away to Bishopbriggs, who were the reigning Glasgow champions and who we only beat in a sudden-death play-off in last year’s Inter Cities Cup. Their course is only 6,200 yards so there will be a fair bit of local knowledge required and our boys will be going through to have a look before the second leg.

“It is different this year for us as we are at home in the first leg, unlike the previous four years, and I think that requires a slightly different approach.

“I believe we need to go out all guns blazing and set a good first-leg lead in the hope that we can hold on in the second leg in Glasgow.

“We look to have pretty much a full side for the first leg so we need to make home advantage tell.”
