Golf: Relegation looming for champs Glen

DEFENDING champions Glen are staring relegation in the face after suffering a fifth straight defeat in this season’s East Lothian Winter Golf League.

They succumbed 3-2 at local rivals Tantallon and now face a treacherous trip to Haddington on Sunday week. Defeat in that will see them go from champs to chumps as they prepare for a campaign in Division 2 next season.

Tantallon’s win keeps them in the hunt to claim Glen’s crown as they are locked together with Longniddry at the top of the table. Longniddry will have home advantage when the two leaders clash head-on in their next outing before the Christmas break.

Gullane are still in the title race as well after they made home advantage count against Haddington. Keith Nicholson and Lee Morgan got off to a fast start at the top of the order and seemed to be in the driving seat when they went four up after just six holes.

They were still leading coming off the 16th green, but Stuart Roberts and Stewart Menzies snatched the last two holes to claim the point for the home team.

It was a similar story in game three, where Murray Saunders and John Miller recovered from being two down to beat Law Hardie and Glenn Anderson on the last.

In Division 2, North Berwick’s perfect start came to a shuddering halt as they failed to record a point at Royal Musselburgh, while Dunbar’s win against Whitekirk sees them move up into second spot.
