Golf: Newbattle to the fore in Winter League

NEWBATTLE made the most of home advantage to dominate the Midlothian Winter League’s season-ending individual championship.

Two of the host club’s young guns led the way in the scratch section, with Graham Reid pipping clubmate Greg Thorburn for the Keith Goodwin Trophy on a countback after they both shot 69s.

The handicap event also produced a Newbattle 1-2 and, likewise, Gary Rodger pipped Scott Stables in a card play-off after they’d signed for matching net 68s.

All these efforts helped the home club claim the team title as well with a total of 278, winning comfortably from Glencorse (296) and Broomieknowe (298).

Broomieknowe did the double in the junior event, Matthew Stewart claiming the scratch spoils and Fraser Whitelaw taking the handicap honours.
