Golf: Loch and Crookston give West dramatic win at East

The home side led 4…-1… at one stage at Royal Musselburgh and still had their nose in front with two games out on the course. But last-green victories from Andrew Loch and Stuart Crookston sealed the points for West – their first win for more than a year.

It looked like curtains for Jimmy Lamond’s side when Zander Culderwell pitched in for a half at the 18th against Keith Reilly.

However, the first indication of the tide starting to turn came when Tom Caldwell pitched in at 18 to secure a vital point against Stephen Simants.

This was followed by further West wins from Lothians captain Mark Timmins and the equally experienced Gary Corrigan. In those final two matches, West were one up playing the last in both matches, meaning a win, draw or a defeat were all still possible for both teams. Loch secured a safe 4 to close out his match against Ross Millar by two holes while former pro Crookston secured a half in 5 for his win.

After winning their opening game away to West, Fife squeezed out a 5…-4… victory over Mid at Drumoig.

The game was settled by the anchor match between Scott Stewart-Cation and Mike Foley. One down playing the last, Stewart-Cation won it with an eight-foot putt to secure a halved game and victory overall for the hosts.
