Golf: Laing keeps her cool in Swiss Open

MUSSELBURGH'S Vikki Laing admitted she had been "nervous all day" – but still managed a final round 69 to finish second and earn a career best £40,000 at the Deutsche Bank Ladies' Swiss Open at Golf Gerre Losone.

With the tournament reduced to 54 holes due to the weather, the 29-year-old scored rounds of 66, 70 and 69 for an 11-under-par total and finished just one shot shy of the American winner, Lee-Anne Pace.

Pace, playing ahead of Laing, closed with a 68 to set the 12 under target, while England's Georgina Simpson, who led entering the final round, finished third on ten under after a 72.

"Overall I'm pretty happy, although a wee bit disappointed not to win," admitted Laing. "A 69 was pretty good because it was very windy."

Laing is the only Scot to have won on the US Futures Tour – at the 2007 Gettysburg Championship – but had never finished higher than sixth in her two years on the Ladies' European Tour.

Scotland's Krystle Caithness hit a last day 71 for a share of ninth place. Second in the Dutch Open two weeks ago, it was a fourth straight top ten for the 21-year-old from Cupar in Fife.
