Golf: Kingsknowe favourites to seal last spot

ONLY one spot remains to be filled in the semi-finals of the West Edinburgh Winter League, with Baberton, Turnhouse and Royal Burgess all already through to the last four.

It’s down to Kingsknowe or Bruntsfield Links for the final berth when they meet a week on Sunday, with Kingsknowe in the driving seat to earn a trip to Royal Burgess in the semis.

The Barnton side have earned that home tie as Section B winners, rounding off an impressive qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over Dalmahoy in their latest outing.

Varun Varadharajan, playing with Gordon Archibald, eagled the sixth in their match before producing a great up-and-down at the 14th to seal a 5 and 4 win.

In the top match, Fraser McCluskey ended a fightback from Dougie Hunter and Sandy Phillips by pitching stone dead at the 17th.

Baberton were held at home by Swanston New in the other Group A match, but that was still good enough to secure second spot.

They’ll be away in the other semi-final to Turnhouse, who made the most of home advantage to record a fine 3-1 win over Bruntsfield Links.

Pride of place for Turnhouse went to junior Leigh Lawson as he produced another eye- catching display.

Both semi-finals are due to take place on March 5.
