Golf: Kerr keen to drive on in Las Colinas

MARK KERR is hoping his golfing dream can come true in Spain over the next fortnight. The Edinburgh man was set to tee off today among the hopefuls in the second stage of the European Tour Qualifying School.

The lucky ones, at four separate venues, will progress to the final stage, which starts in Girona tomorrow.

“This is a week that I’m looking forward to and have prepared hard for over the last four weeks,” said Kerr, who is in the field at Las Colinas, near Alicante.

“It’s a dream of mine to play tournament golf and the next two weeks could make that a reality.”

Kerr, who finished his PGA training during a spell attached to Murrayfield, added: “They don’t call it Q-School for nothing and I feel as though I could have done with more time to prepare.

“I have only been playing full-time since the end of the Scottish PGA Championship in October, so this is my first real test.”

Also in the field at Las Colinas are Craigielaw’s Shaun McAllister, who came through stage one at Dundonald along with Kerr, and Archerfield’s Elliot Saltman.

Saltman passed the same test last year before going on to secure his card, but he is back at the Q-School after finishing 201st on the money-list.

Raymond Russell and Lothians-based Jamie McLeary are at Costa Ballena, as is Braid Hills pro Paul McKechnie, while Dunbar’s Neil Fenwick is in the La Manga field.
