Golf: Independents day proves to be a triumph for Loretto kids

LORETTO Golf Academy made it third-time lucky when a four-strong team won the Independent Schools Golf Association Home Internationals at The Berkshire.

Representing Scotland in the event, the Musselburgh school posted a winning aggregate of 454, finishing eight shots ahead of English representatives Wellington with Ireland's Campbell College (487) and Welsh side Monmouth (522) filling the minor placings.

Lesley Atkins, George Munsey, Lewis Gregory and Sami Bouzabia made up the Loretto team, with the latter firing a 72, the best individual score of the event, on the second day. "It was third-time lucky for us in the event," said Rick Valentine, the Loretto coach.

"After competing in both Ireland and then at home last year it was a fantastic achievement to finally get our hands on the trophy.

"The tournament was played in tough conditions over two fantastic courses and we look forward to hopefully defending our title in Wales next year."

Atkins, whose two-round total of 151 was the best among the Loretto quartet, has now turned her attention to the SLGA Scottish Open Under-16 Championship which was getting underway today at Strathmore.
