Golf: Gallacher off to US Open

LOTHIANS star Stephen Gallacher will make his fourth major appearance in America in a fortnight's time after qualifying for the US Open.

The 36-year-old secured one of just 11 spots up for grabs yesterday with rounds of 70 and 69 to finish joint-fifth at Walton Heath.

Gallacher has played in the US Open only once before, missing the cut at Pinehurst. He also played in the USPGA Championship at Baltusrol that year.

The former Dunhill Links champion then had to wait until last year to be back on US soil in a major, tying for 18th behind Martin Kaymer in the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

Fellow Scots Colin Montgomerie, Richie Ramsay and Scott Jamieson failed to qualify.
