Golf: Finalist Byrne praises Lamb

JAMES BYRNE heaped praise on Lothians caddie Richard Lamb as he set out today in a bid to become the fifth Scot in 19 years to win the Amateur Championship.

Lamb, a full-time caddie at Muirfield, had requested to carry Byrne's bag due to him being a friend of his son, Mark.

"Richard has been brilliant this week," said Banchory's Byrne after booking his place in the 36-hole final with a brace of 2 and 1 wins yesterday.

"Any time I've got ahead of myself, he's got my mind back on the next shot."

The Haddington man has also been reading the Muirfield greens well in helping Byrne earn a title showdown against South Korea's Jin Jeong, the first Asian player to reach the final.

Byrne added: "I'm happy to look at a putt myself but Richard has been re-affirming the lines."

Byrne is the first Scot to reach the final since John Gallagher at Royal Birkdale in 2005, when the Swanston New man lost to Irishman Brian McElhinney.
