Golf: Change would do me good, says Oldcorn

ANDREW OLDCORN reckons he needs a change of venue to have a chance of winning the SSE Scottish Senior Open.

The Edinburgh star got his latest bid in the event off to a promising start with an opening five-under 67 at Fairmont St Andrews.

But he followed that with weekend efforts of 73 and 71 on the Fife coast to finish in a tie for 18th with a five-under total of 211.

It left Oldcorn feeling frustrated as he reflected on finding himself 12 shots adrift of winner Anders Forsbrand.

“As long as the event is held here I might as well not come as I just can’t read the greens,” said the 52-year-old.

“I putted awfully on Saturday and today, when I played well from tee to green, I had 35 putts.

“The course has been there for the taking but I can’t seem to score.”

Missing out on a decent cheque in St Andrews has left Oldcorn lying 12th on the Senior Tour money-list heading into this week’s Wales Senior Open at
Conwy. “Parts of my game this week have been better but it’s still not good enough so I’ve still got a bit of work to do,” he added.

East Lothian-based DJ Russell fared better at St Andrews, finishing third behind Forsbrand and
Englishman Phil Golding.

Russell, who designed the courses at Archerfield Links, picked up a cheque for just over £17,000 after a closing 67 that included five back-nine birdies.

It gave the Englishman, who recently won the British Par-3 Championship, a 14-under-par total of 202 – three behind Forsbrand.

Russell had started the day as Forsbrand’s closest challenger, sitting three behind, but was overtaken by Golding after he shot a second successive 64.

“We shot 67 and dropped a spot,” reflected Russell’s son and caddie Chris in summing up a terrific last day’s play by the trio in the final group.
