Golf: Cat drops off pace with 77

A CLOSING 77 dropped North Berwick's Catriona Matthew down to a tie for 34th after the final round of the LPGA Championship, the second major of the women's season.

The British Women's Open champ was inside the top ten after a third-round 69 but finished 22 shots behind runaway winner Cristie Kerr.

On the Ladies European Tour, Vikki Laing also surrendered a few places after a closing 76 in the Ladies Portugal Open.

She finished on 216 – 12 shots behind winner Karen Lunn from Australia.

• KELSEY MacDONALD, who won the Scottish title at Craigielaw, lost by 2 and 1 to England's Kelly Tidy in the final of the British amateur championship at Ganton in Yorkshire.
