Golf: Boroughmuir Blaze defy the odds to edge out favourites St Mirren

Boroughmuir BLAZE achieved arguably their best result since returning to basketball’s Scottish National League when they beat last season’s Scottish Cup winners and third-placed league finishers St Mirren 69-65 at the Crags Sports Centre on Saturday.

With only seven players on their bench and missing as many as six regulars, Blaze seemed easy meat for the
visitors, who were looking to redeem their cup exit at Portobello two days previously at the hands of Edinburgh Kings, but instead crashed to a second Capital defeat and one which might have put a premature end to their season.

Meanwhile, at Portobello on Saturday, Troon Tornadoes came close to causing an upset at the expense of the Kings, who were without Edgars Rekis (wrist injury).

Kings won 72-62 but only took command to go on a 10-0 run when Troon’s Andy Pearson (24 pts) fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Simon Flockhart top-scored with 21, Lee Reilly adding 18. Ryan Neil had 30 points, Neil Rowan 17 and Gregor Gray 15 in Kings’ juniors 86-57 win over Tornadoes.

Polonia Phoenix scored a notable 57-48 away win over champions Glasgow Rocks in the Scottish Women’s League at Cumbernauld on Saturday, helped by an outstanding 18 points from Claire Paxton, 11 from Ali Mitchell and nine from Lynsey Campbell.

“The team put in a great
defensive shift, limiting Rocks to just 27 points in the last three quarters,” said coach Stewart Harris, whose side trailed 18-21 after the first.

Edinburgh Kool Kats travelled to Aberdeen to reach the third round of the Scottish Cup with a 89-58 win over Granite City Grizzlies.
