Golf: Big step for Armstrong at Turnhouse

FORMER Lothians champion Steven Armstrong won the all-host club clash on the opening night of the Union Motors Turnhouse Open.

He held on for a last-hole win after opponent Doug Imrie, who had been three down at the turn, staged a brave fightback to take the match the distance.

Other winners on a dreich night included Lothians captain Keith Reilly. He played steady golf to come out on top against Uphall’s Jordyn Rhind, after winning the tenth and 13th.

In the other ties, Simon Lockhart beat Andy Stevenson while Gary Yorkston defeated Graham Stevenson. The first round is completed tonight, when those in action include the top two qualifiers, Dalmahoy’s Iain Wilson and Paul Drake from Pumpherston. They finished tied on 138, with Wilson, who had rounds of 68 and 70, claiming the honours on a countback. His first-round opponent is Craigielaw’s Greig Smail, while Lothians champion Drake is up against Carrickvale’s Simon Hermiston.

Turnhouse teenager Lewis Bain, who shot a 65 in his second round at the weekend, faces Ricky Moffat of Dundas Park. And, in the last of the first-round ties, Uphall’s Colin Swanston is up against Ratho Park’s Neil Snedddon.
