Glasgow put faith in 'late developer' prop Gordon Reid

GLASGOW have signed a second club prospect inside a week with Ayr prop Gordon Reid following Scott Wight, while Premiership club Sale have handed opportunities to three more young Scots.

Reid, a 24-year-old loosehead, trained with Glasgow this season and came off the bench to make his Magners League debut against Ospreys in March. He fills the hole left by the retirement of former Canada captain Kevin Tkachuk and is another "late developer" given a chance at the pro level by Sean Lineen.

The coach said: "We've had a good chance to get to know Gordon when he's been training with us, and there's no doubt that the necessary ability and desire are there for him to progress and do well for this club. He's impressed the coaches and the squad not only with the technical aspects of his game, which are all very sound, but with the determination that he has to keep improving as a player."

Reid said: "I'm delighted to have been given this chance by Glasgow, and I'd like to thank Sean and the other coaches for the faith that they've shown in me. My task now is to work as hard as I possibly can to prove my worth and make the most of the opportunity."

Lineen also confirmed that winger Hefin O'Hare, a former sevens and A cap, is retiring from pro rugby to pursue a new career with a chartered surveying company in the city.

Meanwhile, Sale have offered Alex Blair and Fraser Brown, who had their contracts terminated by Edinburgh due to injury, the opportunity to complete their rehab with the Premiership club with a view to them following fellow Scots Fraser McKenzie and Richie Vernon and joining full-time next season. Young Melrose full-back Fraser Thomson has also been offered a short-term contract at Edgeley Park - effectively a three-month trial period during the World Cup window - and is considering the offer.
