Glasgow Hawks 39 - 5 Hillhead/Jordanhill: Hawks power past Hills to take West semi-final spot

HAWKS clinched their expected place in the RBS West Regional Cup semi-final with this comfortable seven-tries-to-one win.

A hurricane-like wind blew them into a five tries to nil lead at the break as their back row and in particular No.8 Ross Miller dominated.

Miller made the break for Kris Hamilton’s ninth-minute opening try, before, off his scrummage pick up, Hamilton scored again nine minutes later.

The third touchdown, in 25 ninutes, was from orthodox handling from a quickly-taken penalty. Tom Steven popped up on the wrong wing to score.

Tom Preece scored Hawks’ fourth try in 33 minutes before Miller drove off a close-range scrum for the fifth try in 37 minutes.

The tricky wind had prevented Michael Martin from converting the first four tries but, when he went off, Peter Jericevich took over to convert Miller’s try. Hawks, short-handed from Rory Hamilton’s late yellow card scored again through Steven’s try – 40 seconds into the second half.

Hills lost their No.8, Dougie Wood, to a yellow card but kept Hawks defending desperately. Back came Woods, only to collect a second yellow and a red with 20 minutes left.

But Hills kept plugging away and got a deserved try through Haddon MacPherson, before Hawks’ Grant Strang cancelled that consolation out and Jericevich’s conversion completed the scoring.
