Glasgow 2014: Business chiefs aim for legacy

The event, held at Aggreko’s global manufacturing hub, was attended by Commonwealth Games organising committee chairman Lord Smith of Kelvin and Team GB Olympic men’s curling captain David Murdoch. The FTSE-100 company unveiled a specially commissioned artwork generator to celebrate the Games, which will become a familiar feature for spectators outside many of the Games’ stadia and venues.

Under the banner ‘Generating Powerful Partnerships’ it is hoped that the Aggreko event will spark new shared opportunities for Scotland’s businesses and communities as a result of Glasgow hosting the XX Commonwealth Games.

Angus Cockburn, the firm’s interim chief executive officer, said: “We are deeply proud of our roots as a Scottish business with a truly global presence. We now operate in more than 100 countries, but Glasgow remains the centre of that business. Glasgow 2014 will celebrate all that is Scotland, Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games and we are determined that it brings Scottish businesses and communities together.”

It’s great to have a highly-regarded global power firm with headquarters in the Glasgow area and an impressive manufacturing plant in Dumbarton supporting us as we prepare to welcome the world to the largest multi-sport event Scotland has ever hosted.”

Aggreko will supply temporary power as well as temperature control services to 29 competition and non-competition Games venues, including several stadia, the operations centre and athletes village. It will also supply the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) at the SECC, Glasgow.
