Fraser McKenna is top Scot as Jack Senior wins at Lytham

Glasgow's Fraser McKenna secured one of his best finishes on the international amateur stage last night when he claimed sixth place at the wind-ravaged Lytham Trophy.

The 20-year-old, runner-up in the 2008 British Boys' championship, closed with rounds of 76 and 77 over the brutal Royal Lytham links for a 26-over aggregate of 306.

Balmore member McKenna finished seven shots behind Lancashire's Walker Cup contender Jack Senior, whose tally of 299 was the second highest winning score in the event's 46-year history. Senior posted rounds of 72 and 74 to win by five shots as he added the Lytham Trophy to a run of titles that has included the South of England Open, the New South Wales Open, the Egyptian Open and the prestigious Hampshire Hog over the past year.

McKenna was one of seven Scots within six shots of the lead after 36 holes but the remaining members of the tartan contingent saw their challenges blown off course on the final day.

Jordan Findlay, sharing second at halfway, dropped out of the running with a third-round 85 and eventually shared 14th on 310 with Fife's former Scottish Boys' champion James White.

Kris Nicol, runner-up at Lytham a year ago, closed with an 84 and a 76 for a 311 and finished in a tie for 18th with Craigmillar Park Open winner Greg Paterson.
