Fraser on Fishing: Nairn better than new waters to refresh appetite

I TRAVELLED north past Inverness for some new waters to fish and found one at Arrochar on the outskirts of Nairn.

It is a three lochan venue with some quality fish. Although there are bigger fish, the average weight of the trout is about 2lb.

However, there are plenty of them and they scrap really well in the peaty water.

On arrival , I was invited into a competition and I duly accepted. Fish were head and tailing so it was easy to target them and putting a well-presented fly in front of them usually met with a positive take.

Every platform I went on to, I was into a fish and it was going to go down to bag weights to decide the outcome.

The average depth is about 12 foot so a midge tip with a single Damsel was the tactic. A light ripple broke the surface tension and covered my shadow which by now was over the water.

I landed and kept my first two fish which weighed more than 2lb.

I then decided to go for a bigger one to complete the bag. They all came in around the same weight until I managed to coax one at well over 3lb.

This was quite a nice fish but with hindsight I should have returned it as I was get two bigger trout later in the day but they had to be returned. It is Sod's Law but if I had held back I might not have got another so thank heavens for small mercies. The fishery staff were excellent and the anglers were very friendly and I will return soon.
