Fraser on fishing: Cash for Kids event was on the money

What a fantastic day it was for the Cash for Kids fishing event at Kailzie Gardens in Peebles.

Forth 2 radio presenter Bob Malcolm and his good lady Carol- Ann were on hand to greet everyone one arrival as well as present the prizes at the finish.

It was not a sell out, but it was busy enough to promote a healthy competition as well as good banter. I tackled up with a floater and, for devilment, put on a big Yellow Dancer to fool the opposition. However, at my starting platform I changed to a size 12 hothead Damsel and began fishing.

After ten minutes I had two nice fish at well over 3lb and dropped a few. It was at this point I saw several Yellow Dancers flying threw the air and gave a quiet chuckle. After getting my third and final fish I weighed in and went on to catch and release. I hooked at least 11 more and dropped as many. The fish were rising but most of the takes were on the drop or at the start of a slow figure of eight retrieve. My compliments go to the management for the quality and condition of fish.

It was good to see ten-year-old Russell Turnbull taking seven fish to come second and he has a bright future. The session ended with a rod average of 4.5 fish and the sum of £1265 afterwards in aid of the charity. It would be remiss of me not to thank the catering team who provided the breakfast and superb lunch. It has been a long time since I have been to Kailzie Fishery but, going on this showing, I will be back very soon.
