World Cup qualifying classics: Scotland 4 - 2 Spain, 8 May, 1957

JACKIE Mudie was the star of the show as his sparkling hat-trick set Scotland on the way to the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden.

The Blackpool forward served notice of what was to come during the opening match of the qualifying campaign when his fierce shot forced a fine save from goalkeeper Ramallets.

But he wasn’t to be denied. After 22 minutes, Mudie’s powerful header crashed back off the crossbar, and he was on hand to smash the rebound into the net.

Spain were soon back on terms through Kubala, but a penalty by John Hewie restored the Scots’ lead after Tommy Ring was hauled down in the box. Spain once again levelled via Suarez, but thereafter it was all about Mudie, above.

After 70 minutes, he played a one-two with Bobby Collins to put Scotland back in front. Nine minutes later, Collins was the provider again, as Mudie made it 4-2.
