Wind forces Ayr postponement

Ayr United’s First Division game against leaders Ross County, which was scheduled for tomorrow, has already been called off after parts of the Main Stand roof at Somerset Park were lost during yesterday’s storms.

Ayr alerted the SFL offices at Hampden at lunchtime yesterday and a spokesperson at the national stadium said: “We had been made aware of a potential issue at Somerset Park, and by mid-afternoon it was decided the storm damage was such that the game had to be called off.”

Meanwhile, Kenny Shiels has called for the postponement of Kilmarnock’s Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Dunfermline at East End Park tomorrow if there is no let-up in the inclement weather.

As storm force winds battered Scotland, leaving people advised not to make unnecessary journeys and many schools closed, Kilmarnock were forced to abandon their scheduled training session at Garscube in Glasgow.

Kilmarnock manager Shiels claimed that wind ruined the game against Aberdeen at Rugby Park on Saturday, even though the home side ran out 2-0 winners, and he is hoping more potential problems will be given due consideration.

“The game against Aberdeen shouldn’t have been played,” said Shiels. “It was a really bad day. And the recent Motherwell versus Dundee United game shouldn’t have been played. If it still as windy as it is today, it will put the Dunfermline game in doubt.”

Shiels admitted Kilmarnock benefited against Aberdeen because their first goal came about from a defensive error after the ball had hung in the air, but he said: “There should be total priority to the product and if it is like the way it is today, the Dunfermline game shouldn’t be played.”
