Win over Bonnyrigg sees 17s open up six-point gap

Newcraighall Leith Vics 17s moved six points clear at the top of SERYFA Division 2 after a 2-1 home victory over nearest challengers Bonnyrigg Rose at Newcraighall Park.

Both sides have enjoyed fine starts to the new season, with victory for Newcraighall stretching their 100 per cent league record to seven matches.

The hosts started the more confident side, finding their rhythm early on and looking to get in behind the Bonnyrigg defence at every opportunity.

The lively Jordan Williams came closest to opening the scoring when his shot hit the top of the crossbar after good work from team-mate Stuart Mackay.

Williams was then provider with a sublime cross which was met by a powerful Martin Morrison header that brought out a tremendous save from Connar Easton.

However, Easton could do nothing about Newcraighall’s opener when Jake McBride’s rasping drive found the top left corner of the net.

The home side then doubled their advantage three minutes before the break. A superb exchange up the left flank between Mackay and Williams provided the former with an opportunity six yards from goal and he finished with ease to make it 2-0.

Bonnyrigg were handed a lifeline five minutes after the restart but failed to take advantage from the penalty spot as Euan Casey’s weak effort was saved by Ryan McKinnon.

The visitors set up a tense finale when Steven Paton
nodded past McKinnon from six yards, but the Newcraighall defence held firm to see out
victory.

Newcraighall coach Martin
Cook was pleased his side
cemented their position at the top of the league.

Cook said: “I thought we were the much better side and played all the football. I think we should have scored a lot more to make it more comfortable, but we’re delighted to be top.”

Currie Boys’ Club 13s turned in one of their best performances of the season to defeat Musselburgh Young Stars 6-2 at Wallyford Park.

The result means Currie have leapfrogged Musselburgh in Division 4 and have now set their sights on moving up the league table.

Midfielder Conor Heneghan, scorer of Currie’s sixth, was happy with the result.

He said: “We have played most of the good teams so far this season, but we played really well against Musselburgh and have moved away from the bottom of the league.”

The visitors were rampant from kick-off and were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Nathan Baxter, Paul Crowley and Jason Trainer.

However, Musselburgh rallied after the break to close the deficit to 3-2.

Firstly, Dan Stewart reduced the lead to two before a fine solo effort from Kieran Sterling kept the Currie players on
their toes after he struck a
second.

However, just as an unlikely comeback looked on the cards, the home side appeared to run out of steam and Trainer complete his hat-trick with a further two goals before Heneghan got his name on the scoresheet with his side’s sixth to complete a comfortable
victory for Currie.

Leith ATHLETIC 14s scored two goals in the last five minutes to snatch a 3-2 victory in an entertaining Division 1 clash with Edina Hibs at Leith Links.

Edina opened the scoring after only 20 seconds when Jack Combe’s shot from 25 yards looped into the back of the net to shock the home side.

However, Liam Gregory did manage to equalise for Leith, only for Ross Hope to restore the advantage for Edina as he made it 2-1 going in at half-time. With the clock ticking down and Edina on course for victory, Leith hauled themselves level for a second time when
Jordan Smith curled an exquisite
free-kick into the top left
corner.

However, the hosts were not finished and pressed for the winner, which they got when Rory Smith netted to put Leith 3-2 ahead.

Leith coach Brendan McCann was relieved to find a winner in the dying minutes in a match that looked to be out of reach for his side.

He said: “We’re pleased with the result as it looked as if we were going to end up with nothing. It was a really close match so I’m happy.”
