Willo Flood’s Ireland cap hopes raised by cup show

ABERDEEN star Willo Flood is in line for a surprise first-ever Republic of Ireland call-up after impressing Roy Keane.

The former Dundee United midfielder has been in excellent form this season since his summer move to Pittodrie.

He helped the Dons defeat Celtic 2-1 at Parkhead in the William Hill Scottish Cup fifth-round tie at the weekend. And he caught the eye of watching Republic of Ireland No 2 Keane, who was there to spy on Celtic striker Anthony Stokes, who grabbed the opener.

The Manchester United legend was understood to have been hugely impressed with 28-year-old Flood.

Republic manager Martin O’Neill could now name the all-action player in his squad next week for next month’s friendly against Serbia.

Former Manchester City ace Flood actually played against Keane in midfield in a Manchester derby in November 2004. The game finished goalless.

And the Dubliner has always dreamed of playing for his country. He said: “You never give up hope, once you are playing well and enjoying your football you have a chance. It’s something I have always wanted to do.”
