Wick’s Highland League title dream burns on

WICK Academy proved they are not about to give up their title dream without a fight as they saw off Forres Mechanics 3-1 at home.

Barry Wilson’s title pretenders were emphatic victors against the reigning champions with Richard MacAdie snatching the opener after just nine minutes. Gary Weir hit a crucial second three minutes after the break and Richie Cunningham netted the killer third just five minutes later. Scott Fraser slammed in a consolation for the Can Cans.

Closest challengers Cove Rangers crushed bottom side Fort William 6-0 in Aberdeen. Jordan Leyden and Martin Johnston both struck doubles for Cove, while Blair Yule and Robbie Henderson bagged the other two.

Clach were also decisive 5-0 winners at home to Strathspey Thistle thanks to Blair Lawrie’s hat-trick and goals from Scott Graham and Brian MacLeod.

A double from Polish hitman Andrzej Kleczkowski helped Huntly to a 3-0 triumph at Buckie with Pat Vigurs claiming the third.

Brora Rangers enjoyed a 2-1 home win over Inverurie Locos. Zander Sutherland netted for the hosts after 14 minutes and the slender lead stood until the 83rd minute when Neil Gauld levelled from the penalty spot. But with a minute left, ex-Caley Thistle man Dale Gillespie popped up with the winner for Brora.

Nairn County, meanwhile, staged a stirring comeback to beat Deveronvale at home. Martin Charlesworth’s penalty after only three minutes sent the hosts behind but a Kyle Rae own goal equaliser and John Cameron winner rescued County.
