THEATRE: The Little Mermaid

It’s official: pantomime season is well and truly underway. This evening brings the opening show of The Little Mermaid at Stirling’s MacRobert Centre. Set in the underwater city of Oceania, where’s there’s “no violence, no gaudy colours and not even a whiff of Celebrity Big Brother,” this twist on the classic tale sees mermaid Ariel fall in love with Captain Spark Barrel: the most feared and handsome pirate in the pantosphere.

EXHIBITION: Mat Fleming

LifeSpace Gallery hosts the solo showcase of resident artist Mat Fleming in the City of Discovery. The first Artist in Residence at the College of Life Sciences, Fleming’s work considers the parallels in forming a moving image in both art and science. He primarily explores film-making and microscopy by using light lenses, film and animation. Fleming’s work has been shown internationally at events including Rotterdam International Film Festival, Cinema Nova (Brussels) and Edinburgh’s Embassy Gallery.

MUSIC: Ghostpoet

Critically acclaimed rapper Ghostpoet – real name Obaro Ejimiwe – brings his Mercury Prize nominated album Shedding Skin to Glasgow’s iconic Art School this evening. Also nominated for his debut album Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam in 2011, this is a chance to see the supremely talented producer in action in one of Glasgow’s best music venues.

PERFORMANCE ARTS: Circa - Beyond

The circus company that brought us Wunderkammer and Close Up are back in Edinburgh for their debut appearance as part of the Christmas programme. Taking place in the 1920’s themed Spiegeltent, Circa bring their surreal show Beyond back to the capital after it’s successful airing at 2014’s Fringe. Drawing us into a surreal universe of cabaret, the animal kingdom and asylum, expect Rubix cubes, white rabbits, impressive acrobatics and plenty of madness.

COMEDY: James Acaster - Represent

One of the standout acts of this year’s Fringe, James Acaster will take to the stage at Oran Mor this evening. The Chortle Winner for Breakthrough and Best Show 2015, Acaster’s television appearances including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Russell Howard’s Good News and Mock the Week. If you missed him at the festival, this is your chance to catch one of the country’s most hotly-tipped comedians.
