Vogts ready to quit Azerbaijan

Berti Vogts is set to quit as Azerbaijan national coach – claiming the country’s football association has failed to support him.

The German, who ended a calamitous two-year stint as Scotland manager in 2004, has managed the Azeris since 2008.

But Vogts is angry he has so few eligible players to pick from, with the oil-rich nation’s clubs importing foreign stars wholesale – despite his pleas for the system to be reformed.

“I’m not intending to renew my contract at the end of the year,” the 64-year-old said. “I’ve got two interesting offers of jobs with other national teams.

“For me to stay the Azeri FA has to fulfil my wishes about more domestic players in the league, and write it into my contract.

“But, as I know that won’t happen, I will probably end my stay. I’ve been offering them a form of development aid for three years.”

Azerbaijan have won just eight of their 40 matches under Vogts, losing 22 times.
