Virgil van Dijk in Dutch squad for Euro 2016 games

CELTIC defender Virgil van Dijk has been added to Guus Hiddink’s preliminary squad for the Netherlands’ upcoming Euro 2016 clash against Latvia, and next month’s friendly with Mexico.

Van Dijk is included along with fellow defenders Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa); Manchester United’s Daley Blind; Ajax duo Ricardo van Rhijn and Joel Veltman; PSG stopper Gregory van der Wiel; Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij; Bruno Martins Indi (Porto); Paul Verhaegh of Augsburg and Jetro Willems of PSV Eindhoven, recalled after nearly 12 months out.

There is no place, however, for Hamburg midfielder Rafael van der Vaart or Newcastle United’s Daryl Janmaat.

The Netherlands will take on Mexico on November 12 at the Amsterdam Arena, followed by the Euro 2016 qualifier against Latvia at the same venue four days later.

Hiddink will finalise his squad on November 7, the Dutch FA has confirmed.

The Netherlands are third in Euro 2016 Group A qualifying, six points behind Iceland and Czech Republic after three games.
