The Tannadice club are looking for a new boss after Mixu Paatelainen was dismissed following relegation from the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Defender Sean Dillon will pick the Tangerines’ line-up for Friday night’s game at Inverness but Raith Rovers boss Ray McKinnon looks increasingly like being the man who will take over in the summer.

However, the bookies have also installed Wright, who United tried and failed to land before appointing Paatelainen in October, as the second favourite to become the Finn’s replacement.

But that has come as a surprise to the Northern Irishman.

He penned a new three-year deal just days after Saints rebuffed United’s approach for him and is now looking forward to a bumper budget after holding talks with Perth chairman Steve Brown.

And as far as the 52-year-old is concerned, McKinnon is the only candidate under consideration.

He told Press Association Sport: “I don’t know why my name has been mentioned. I can only see one name getting it.

“I don’t know why my name would be mentioned when I’ve just signed a three-year contract.

“We are still in the Premiership, so I am puzzled by it all.

“I’m happy here, that’s why I signed my new deal. I’m here for another three seasons and the chairman has already indicated that we want to try to push on.

“That’s what we want to do, because I feel that’s important for me. With the success we’ve had over the last three years, I feel the time is right to make more money available and try to bring a wee bit more quality in so we can try to compete with the other clubs around us.

“I want the club to move forward because I am ambitious. And having spoken to the chairman here, I know the club is ambitious as well.”
