Tommy Wright in the dark over Stevie May’s future

ST JOHNSTONE manager Tommy Wright is bracing himself for a £1 million summer bid for talismanic striker Stevie May. But he will not let the 25-goal Scottish Cup hero go without a fight.

The 21-year-old, who scored both of Saints’ goals in Sunday’s 2-1 Scottish Cup semi-final victory over Aberdeen, wasn’t swayed by interest from Peterborough, Preston and Rotherham, but bigger clubs are waiting in the wings as the player’s stock rises.

Wright revealed: “We’ve spoken to Stevie and his agent about possibly extending his contract. I will understand if that doesn’t happen but he’s someone I want to keep here. Obviously he’s attracted a lot of attention and there will be more in the next window. But it will have to be the right thing for him and for the club.

“Obviously I’d love to keep him but if he doesn’t sign then going into the last year of his deal you’d have to look at it. We’re realistic enough to know that if the right offer comes in and Stevie is happy with it then he’ll be away. That’s football, you just get on with it. But he’s under contract and I’m hoping to keep working with him for a while yet.

“His two goals were excellent, the first one was a real poacher’s goal. And, the second one, his touch and finish were magnificent. He played very well out on the left as well, his finishing is instinctive. The second one is a toe-poke but that was the right thing to do, it was just natural for him.”

Wright will square up to final opponents Dundee United in a dress rehearsal this weekend and with fourth place still up for grabs, he won’t throw in youngsters. He said: “We’ll assess it with Stevie and with everyone else. We want to finish as high up the league as possible so will be trying to do that. Stevie has played a lot of football, we’ll have to think about it because we’ve left him out a few times to freshen him up.”
