Third Division: Spiders climb to top

Queen’s Park sit at the top of the Third Division for the first time in just over three years after seeing off Elgin City 4-0 at Borough Briggs.

The last time the Spiders were able to look down at everyone else came after a 1-0 win at the same Highland ground in August 2009, but the amateurs will be hoping that is where the comparisons end.

Not long after that climb to the summit the only full-time team in the league, Livingston, clicked into gear and won the title by 15 points. Gardner Speirs’ side play Annan next, and a win would then see them travel as the top dogs to face this season’s full-time team, Rangers. Queen’s were two ahead by half-time as teenager Lawrence Shankland flicked the ball home on 29 minutes with Tony Quinn adding a second from close range. Jamie Longworth then grabbed a second half double.

Peterhead dropped three points off the pace after losing 2-1 to Annan where Graeme Ramage scored after just two minutes and Michael Daly doubled the lead in the second half before Martin Bavidge netted a late consolation.

East Stirlingshire’s resources were so stretched before kick-off against Clyde that they listed fans favourite Joe Savage as a trialist substitute despite the 28-year-old not playing any competitive football in a year. And despite losing Rhys Devlin and Nathan Shepherd to injury after less than ten minutes, the Shire ran out 3-0 winners. Kevin Turner and Paul Quinn scored in the first half and Savage topped a late cameo appearance with a late third.

Stirling were sent bottom after losing 4-1 to Berwick with Lee Currie, Darren Lavery and John Ferguson netting before on-loan striker Jordan White scored and Ferguson got a second.
