Gary Harkins has fired a shot at Dundee’s potential Scottish Cup quarter-final opponents Rangers by insisting the Glasgow giants are a “new club”.

The Ibrox side suffered through the liquidation of oldco Rangers four years ago, prior to making their way back up the leagues from the bottom tier.

It’s been a bone of contention for fans throughout Scottish football whether Rangers are the same club as the one that existed prior to 2012, with Gers fans vehemently insisting that they are. It’s an opinion backed up by SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

Regardless, Harkins will likely be in for some rough treatment by the Ibrox home crowd should Dundee navigate their way past Dumbarton in tomorrow night’s fifth round replay.

The midfielder, who featured in games against Rangers prior to 2012, insists he’s never played the Championship league leaders before.

Speaking after his side’s 0-0 draw with Kilmarnock, he said: “They’re just a new club. I’ve not played them before, so I’m looking forward to that. It should be good.

“It will be a tough game against Dumbarton, they made it hard for us down there and it wasn’t the best of days, but there is a chance to go to Ibrox for a quarter-final so we will be right up for it.

“If we could finish top six and at least make the quarter-finals, it would be a good season for us. I have said before that the second season is always tougher, we finished top six last time, to do it again and push on – if we can go on a better cup run – we would be happy with that.”
