CELTIC have signed Israeli international defender Rami Gershon on loan until the end of the season and are also ready to make a January transfer window move for Australian international midfielder Tom Rogic.

Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, confirmed that 24-year-old left-sided centre-half Gershon has joined the Scottish champions on a temporary deal from Belgian club Standard Liege.

If Gershon impresses for Neil Lennon’s side, Celtic have an option to sign him on a permanent transfer at the end of the season. He will be eligible for the Champions League last-16 tie against Juventus in February.

The player has joined up with Lennon’s squad at their winter break training camp in Marbella and could feature in their friendly match there against Romanian League leaders Steaua Bucharest next Tuesday.

Also training with Celtic in Spain is 20-year-old Rogic, who has been granted permission by his Australian club Central Coast Mariners to go on trial with the SPL leaders.

Celtic will look to conclude a deal for Rogic this month if Lennon feels he would be a valuable addition to his squad for the rest of the season.

Lawwell is also hopeful of retaining the services of key players Gary Hooper and Victor Wanyama, despite failing to conclude negotiations on new contracts with either man so far.

“Neil wants to keep the squad together through January and if we can, that’s what we’ll do,” said Lawwell. “If we can add to it, we will.

“It can be risky letting players enter the final year of their contracts and that’s the balance we have with Gary Hooper. We need to try and get value out of him. But hopefully he will re-sign.”

Meanwhile, ESPN announced yesterday that it will show coverage of next week’s friendly with Steaua Bucharest. The match will be broadcast live from Spain on Tuesday with a 6.30pm (UK time) kick-off.
