Students fight back to stun leaders Spartans

EAST OF SCOTLAND: Edinburgh University produced the shock result of the day in the Central Taxis Premier Division when they beat runaway leaders Spartans 3-2. Spartans held a 2-0 lead at half-time, with goals from Gavin Malin and Chris Anderson, but three goals in a 15-minute spell midway through the second-half from Danny Main (penalty), Andrey Kuzmenko and Jack Beacher saw the University inflict a first league defeat of the season on Spartans.

In the only other league fixture, Tynecastle moved into the top half of the table with a 2-1 win against Selkirk.

In the King Cup first round, a Chris Geddes goal earned Stirling University a 1-0 win against Edinburgh City, while Lothian Thistle needed extra-time to beat Gretna 2008 4-3 and Civil Service Strollers beat Heriot Watt University 2-1. Elsewhere, Gala Fairydean beat Ormiston 3-0, Vale of Leithen beat Kelso United 5-4 on penalties after the game finished goalless, Leith Athletic beat Craigroyston 5-1 and Whitehill overcame Eyemouth United 4-0.
