Steven bids to maintain Tynie revival

Tom STEVEN was appointed as manager of Tynecastle at the end of last year and was given the remit of ensuring that the club kept their place in the 
Central Taxis Premier 
Division.

When Steven and his brother Shaun took over, Tynecastle were languishing in 
bottom spot with only five points to their credit but some shrewd management skills – honed at Cowdenbeath and 
Edinburgh City – saw the 
Fernieside club easily maintain their top-flight status. 
Steven has been busy in 
the transfer market during 
the summer and has attracted two new goalkeepers, 
Graham McDonald and 
Jamie Newman along with Ross Weir, Neil Dewar, Gavin 
Pettigrew, Daryl Burdett and Jamie Devlin.

“We did well in pre-season with wins against Penicuik 
Athletic and Dunbar 
United,” said Steven. “That form has continued into our East of Scotland 
Qualifying League Cup 
ties where we have beaten 
Gala Fairydean 6-2, Duns 
4-1 and drawn 2-2 with Edinburgh City. We were well ahead of Gala and Duns and I felt we were the 
better team against City and created the better chances.

“It will take some freak 
results for us not to qualify 
for the quarter-finals and we 
go into tomorrow’s game away to Burntisland Shipyard 
with confidence.

“What I will say is that if we want to be successful 
then we will have to concede less goals because at the 
moment we are asking a lot of our offensive players.

“I am told that Burntisland play the ball back to front in a very direct fashion and they are dangerous at 
set-plays.

“We will have to adjust accordingly as we have been playing lots of passes but that is not always achievable.”
