Spurs get back to winning ways with 4-0 rout

TOTTENHAM Hotspur picked up their first league win since 18 August by cruising past relegation candidates Wigan Athletic 4-0 at White Hart Lane yesterday.

Jermaine Jenas scored twice and Aaron Lennon was also on target to put Spurs three up at the break. Darren Bent came off the bench in the second half to complete the scoring.

Dimitar Berbatov led the attack, but it was another clean sheet that excited Juande Ramos. The manager arrived a fortnight ago with a reputation of attacking football from his time at Sevilla, although he has focused his work in defence and Spurs have not conceded in three of his four matches.

"Once you get that clean sheet, players play much better and have more confidence," he said.

Jenas opened the scoring with a tap-in after Robbie Keane's fine work on the byeline. Berbatov passed to Jenas to round Chris Kirkland for the second, after 26 minutes. Before the break it was 3-0. Berbatov cushioned a huge clearance from goalkeeper Paul Robinson before laying the ball back arrogantly for Aaron Lennon to volley home.

Bolton Wanderers failed to match their heroics of midweek. Having held Bayern Munich to a draw in the UEFA Cup on Thursday, they had to settle for a goalless draw against fellow strugglers Middlesbrough.

Portsmouth hit the bar and post through Glen Johnson and substitute David Nugent, but had to settle for a goalless draw at home to Manchester City, for whom goalkeeper Joe Hart had an outstanding match.
