Six players that played when ineligible

Ali Coote was ineligible to play for Dundee United against Inverness in their 3-2 victory in the Highlands. As a result, the Tangerines were hit with a fine and points deduction. Here are six other examples of players playing when they should not have.

Bartosz Bereszynski v Celtic

Legia Warsaw were cruising to a 6-1 aggregate victory over the Scottish champions when, in the 86th minute of their second leg tie at Murrayfield, they decided to sub on Bartosz Bereszynski. Unfortunately for the Poles, the player had not been properly registered in the previous round against St Patrick, where he was due to serve a suspension that carried over from the previous season. As a result, he remained suspended for the Celtic tie and this infraction saw the visitors automatically lose the game 3-0 which, coupled with the 4-1 home win, meant they officially lost out on away goals.

Michael Paton and Willie Dyer v Hamilton

Brechin had two players ineligible for their Scottish Cup fourth-round replay against Hamilton eight years ago. Those being wide midfielder Michael Paton and full back Willie Dyer. At first it was thought that Paton was not eligible to participate then it later transpired that Dyer should also have not been available for selection.

As a result, the £10,000 fine and a replay turned into a fine of the same amount and an expulsion from the cup. A blow seeing as they won the tie 2-1 and would have went on to play Aberdeen.

Reece Donaldson v Ayr

Last year in League One defender Reece Donaldson was incorrectly playing for Peterhead. His manager Jim McInally believed it was just a one-game suspension but due to the totting up of bookings it meant that he was banned for the next match versus Ayr United as well.

The Blue Toon were fined five figures and had to replay the game, which they had won 3-2 the first time around. Unfortunately, they drew the rearranged fixture three each.

Calum Woods v Stenhousemuir

Dunfermline’s Scottish Cup victory over Stenhousemuir went off with just one hitch. Defender Calum Woods was meant to have watched the 7-1 demolishing from the stands rather than on the pitch. The Liverpool academy graduate was suspended for his bookings in the 2008-09 tournament that carried over.

Due to this, the Pars had to face the Warriors at Ochiview Park and progressed after extra time 2-1, only to be knocked out by Celtic in the next round.

Michael Andrews v Buckie Thistle

The on loan Falkirk goalkeeper’s inclusion seen his East Stirlingshire side eliminated from the Scottish Cup even though he kept in a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Buckie Thistle. This was because to the documents surrounding his loan extension failing to reach Scottish FA Headquarters at Hampden.

All money made from the win had to be handed back, in addition to seeing their opponents enter the fifth round against Brechin.

Keith McLeod v Culter

He was in his testimonial year at Spartens but Keith McLeod should have missed this game out due to an administration error as the commencement dates on the registration form were not filled out. This seen the defeated Culter play Partick Thistle in the third round of the Scottish Cup.

To heap on that misery, their second round winnings of £4,000 was suspended for 12 months as well.
