Capital One Cup: Steven Fletcher makes debut as Sunderland beat Morecambe

STEVEN Fletcher made his debut for Sunderland last night as the Barclays Premier League side progressed to the third round of the Capital One Cup with a 2-0 victory over Morecambe.

Fletcher, who didn’t find the net, played the first 66 minutes against the League Two side, while England international Adam Johnson also made his first appearance for Martin O’Neill’s side. Winger Johnson helped set up Sunderland’s opener on 24 minutes when his corner was headed in by James McClean, and McClean added a second with a confident finish from just inside the box.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday produced a shock when they beat Premier League Fulham 1-0. Gary Madine converted a second-half penalty after former Aberdeen and Scotland Under-21 striker Chris Maguire was felled by Stephen Kelly.

League Two Burton produced arguably the performance of the night as they thumped npower Championship outfit Leicester 4-2. Goals from Chris Palmer (20), Cleveland Taylor (53), Robbie Weir (64 pen) and Jacques Maghoma (68) saw the visitors to a surprise victory, while Nigel Pearson’s men replied through Anthony Knockaert and Marko Futacs in the second half.

Nick Ajose struck a last-minute winner as League One Crawley upset Bolton 2-1. Benik Afobe fired Bolton ahead in the 21st minute and the Championship side looked on course for the win heading into the closing moments. But Billy Clarke levelled for the hosts in the 81st minute before Ajose popped up late on to send the Trotters out.

Blackburn manager Steve Kean suffered another setback in his bid to win over his doubters as Rovers crashed out after a 2-1 defeat at League One MK Dons, but Aston Villa lifted the gloom for Paul Lambert with a 3-0 win over Tranmere.
