Hutchinson, who joined from Wallsend Boys Club in 2007, made over 140 appearances for Motherwell including numerous appearances in both the Champions League and Europa League.

The 6ft 2in stopper, who scored nine goals for the Steelmen, was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for season 2012/13, during which Motherwell finished runners-up in Scottish football’s top flight.

Although offered an extended deal by the club, Hutchinson was linked with moves away from Fir Park, with both Rangers and Wolves keeping tabs on the defender over the past few months.

‘Well manager Stuart McCall told motherwellfc.co.uk: “I had mentioned to his agent that we would offer him slightly improved terms from last season, but it was fairly clear that there was some big hitters looking at him.

“Shaun has been excellent for Motherwell and this move is a reward for all his hard work and dedication.

“We will obviously miss him, but at the same time, we wish him well in what is a superb move.”

Hutchinson himself, who made his debut for Motherwell against Hamilton at the tender age of 17, added: “It was a difficult decision to leave Motherwell and I had to really think hard about it.

“It has been a fantastic apprenticeship for me and I am very appreciative of what everyone at the club has done. The fans have also been brilliant and I want to personally thank them for their support.

“However, this is a great opportunity at Fulham and I can’t wait to get started. “

Hutchinson could find himself back at Fir Park in the near future however, with the Cottagers due to travel to Motherwell for a pre-season friendly on July 12.
