WINS for Edinburgh Uni, Stirling Uni and Edinburgh City in the senior round-up.

Premier Division

Edinburgh University 1

Gretna 2008 0

Gretna’s Marc Shiel had the best chance of the first half but his shot was straight at Craig Bald in the Uni goal. In the second half Edinburgh had the wind advantage and made better use of the ball, however, the visitors missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring when Dean Crozier lifted his shot over the bar from four yards out with Bald posted missing. The miss proved costly as Uni got the opening goal when Cyrus Moosavi set off on a solo run leaving Gretna defenders behind and shooting into the net from 18 yards. In the 65th minute, Goodwin was given a second yellow card and left the Gretna players with an uphill task.

Edinburgh University (squad): Bald, Connelly, Cumming, Hamilton, Main, Kuzmenko, C Rankin, J Rankin, Frain, Clarkson, Gray. Rawlinson, Nikolaidis, Chatterjee, Ward, Beacher, Habata, Moosavi, Murray, Whelan.

Lothian Thistle HV 1

Preston Athletic 1

The uneven surface at Saughton Enclosure and the tricky overhead conditions were challenging for both teams although Lothian adapted more quickly and took an early lead. A through ball broke kindly for Lloyd Dignan who rifled it home from ten yards. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested and there was little goalmouth action. Preston equalised four minutes into the second half when a loose ball after a corner kick landed at the feet Mark Cherrie and he slammed it home despite Kevin Swain getting his fingers to the ball.

A second goal arrive on 22 minutes with Dougie Gair finding space at the back post to head home. There was an improvement from the home side after the break but Ian McFarland’s bullet strike on 65 minutes settled the result.

Burntisland Shipyard 1

Selkirk 1

The home side looked to have opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Jordan Crombie got on the end of a Stevie Connor cross at the back post but the referee ruled it out for offside against the midfielder. It was the visitors who took the lead in the 40th minute. A long clearance caught the Shipyard defence on their heels and Michael Holness ran through before stroking the ball past Couser. It took just four minutes for the home side to equalise, though. A goalbound effort from Dale Robertson was halted by the arm of a defender and Brendan Napier made no mistake from the penalty spot.

A third soon followed when Craig Anderson’s shot bounced over Lumsden, and a fourth came through a Bryan Wilson penalty with Douglas heading a fifth to make it five goals in fifteen minutes. Then Stevie Moncur made it six at half time heading in a MacIntosh corner. Craigroyston got their seventh early in the second half when Wilson converted a second penalty but they were unable to add to their tally, and it was the home side who scored the final goal courtesy of a Michael Stewart free-kick in the last minute.

Ormiston played against the strong wind in the first half and controlled the game. Some fine saves by the Lily goalkeeper Brain Young kept the visitors in the game and the opening 45 minutes finished goal-less. The game sprang into life only two minutes into the second half when Ormiston scored through Brian McEwan. Easthouses immediately made two substitutions with John Hunter and Stuart Love entering the contest and the moves paid off. Love threaded a pass to Graeme Young and the big striker ran on to slip the ball into the net. Ten minutes later Love did well to reach the bye-line and his low cross was touched on by Graeme Young to Ryan McQueenie who prodded the ball over the line from close range for the winner.
