Second division: Arbroath keep hopes alive by beating leaders

Arbroath chose the perfect time to hand a first home defeat of the season to leaders Cowdenbeath, as they reduced the gap between the sides to four points with a 3-2 success at Central Park.

The Blue Brazil got off to a good start, with Marc McKenzie putting them ahead. But the tide turned when Kenny Adamson was dismissed midway through the first half. Steven Doris equalised and Kieran McAnespie put Arbroath in front before half-time.

McKenzie levelled from a penalty, but the Red Lichties grabbed the winner when Doris scored after home goalkeeper Thomas Flynn and visiting substitute Collin Samuel collided.

Arbroath player-manager Paul Sheerin said: “It is a great win and it gives us hope that we wouldn’t have had if we had lost. I would still rather be in Cowdenbeath’s position, but we are in there fighting.”

Cowdenbeath’s Colin Cameron said: “It is disappointing, as I felt we deserved a point. We have to be positive as everything is still in our hands.”

Dumbarton inched closer to a play-off spot as they came from behind to draw 1-1 at Albion Rovers, who led through Danny Ferry, before Scott Agnew’s effort was deflected in.

Airdrie moved up to fourth as they made it five clean-sheet wins in a row with a 3-0 victory at Stenhousemuir. Sean Lynch scored early and Willie McLaren made up for missing a penalty with a goal just before half time. Substitute Nathan Blockley added a late third when his cross drifted into the net.

East Fife remain on Airdrie’s tail following a 4-1 win at relegation-threatened Forfar, where Scott Dalziel and Ryan Wallace both grabbed a brace, with Kevin Byers netting for the Loons.

Bottom side Stirling Albion clawed back to within two points of safety with a 2-1 win at Brechin. Alan Cook made up for missing a penalty by hitting the winner after City’s Scott Buist had cancelled out Mark Ferry’s opener.
