Scotland set to play Australia in friendly

Gordon Strachan’s side have announced they will face Poland in Warsaw in March, but have no further fixtures so far, with the Euro 2016 draw taking place next month.

However, reports Down Under have indicated that the Football Federation of Australia are ready to announce either Scotland or Sweden for their final warm-up game at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on 28 May, before leaving for Brazil. The Aussies have drawn a nightmare group in Brazil and will face World and European champions Spain, the Netherlands and Chile.

They are desperate to play a European team who haven’t qualified for the World Cup, in their final preparation match before they head off to South America. Scotland are viewed as more attractive than the Swedes because they believe they would get a guaranteed full house of 80,000 fans due to the large number of Scottish expats Down Under.

It would be Scotland’s first visit to Australia for 29 years, since they clinched qualification to the Mexico World Cup by securing a goalless second-leg draw in Melbourne in 1985, under manager Alex Ferguson, after a 2-0 home leg win.

Strachan missed the Melbourne clash through injury, but could now be set to lead his men to face Ange Postecoglou’s outfit in Sydney next May.
