Scotland move up five places in Fifa world rankings

The Scottish national team have climbed five places to 40th in the Fifa world rankings.

Even though the Tartan Army failed to secure a place at the upcoming European Championships, they enjoyed a jump up from the previous position of 45th.

They are, however, the lowest ranked side in the British Isles, with Northern Ireland securing their highest ever placing at 26th.

Michael O’Neill’s side are two behind Wales, while England are the highest positioned at 10th.

Republic of Ireland, who made it to the Euros after beating out Scotland for the final play-off place in their group, are in 31st.

Argentina now sit atop the rankings with Belgium moving to second. Chile, Columbia and Germany round out the top five.
